Thanks to the tutoring from Niu Huixia, (lecturer from the Department of the Foreign Languages, College of Humanities and Law, BUCT), Chen Yulang ( student from class 1901, grade 2019, College of Humanities and Law, BUCT) wins the first prize in the final of the Beijing division of the 2021 FLTRP · Guocai Cup National English Speech Contest, ranking fourth with the total score.
The Beijing regional final consists of two competitions, namely the knockout and the trial. The knockout is an impromptu speech contest full of challenges. Only the top 15 of the 51 contestants can get the pass to the trial period. However, with a clearly presented theme, vivid examples, and an ending with a sentence pattern of strong parallelism, Chen Yulang cut the trial successfully. And then in the trial, the contestants need to make both a speech on an assigned topic and an impromptu one, followed up with questions from foreign experts and scholars. Chen Yulang’s speech in this round is expressive and impressive, conquering both the nine judges and the audience in the live room with his moving stories, beautiful accent, confident smile and powerful aura. In his impromptu speech, he expounds in layers, showing quick thinking and strong logic. While answering the questions from judges, Chen Yulang not only proves his excellent English listening comprehension ability, but also cites the latest developments in politics and science, as well as puts forward his own ideas with innovativeness. His performance is highly recognized and praised by the host immediately after the competition. What's worth mentioning is that facing the difficulties in taking the online competition, Chen Yulang demonstrates very quick response while tackling the sudden technical failure, completing the competition after adjusting his pace in time, and winning the first prize with excellent scores. The first prize also goes to four other contestants from Peking University, Beijing Normal University and other universities. The special prize winner is from University of Science & Technology Beijing, Tsinghua University and Beijing Language and Culture University.
Practice makes perfect. In order to prepare for the competition, Chen Yulang has done numerous practices and read extensively, with the guidance of his teacher Niu Huixia. Over and over again, he revised his speech drafts, polishing skills, collecting and sorting materials, summarizing and analyzing hot topics, and doing timed trainings for the impromptu speech. Zhang Yaning, in charge of the English competition, also gave a lot of help and support throughout the competition. Chen Yulang achieves so outstandingly in such fierce competition, which also reflects the concerted efforts by the College of Humanities and Law, which, throughout the years, has been working so hard, in its English teaching practice, to improve students' language proficiency, logical thinking ability, cross-cultural perspective and problem-solving ability. In the meantime, it integrates the ideological and political content into the English courses and puts great emphases on cultivating students' international vision and patriotic feelings.
