Overview

The College of Humanities and Law was established in March, 2000, after it had combined the former Department of Economics and Law, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Sports and Department of Social Sciences (today’s Marxism College). The predecessor of this College could be traced back to Department of Fundamental Courses and Department of Social Science when Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) was founded in 1958.

Over the past 20 years, the College has grown into the biggest college of liberal arts within a university predominantly featured by science and engineering. With its distinctive specialties and profound humanistic background, the College includes five departments, i.e., Law, Management, Literature, Education and Art. At present, there are 1362 undergraduates, 355 postgraduates and 52 preparatory students within the College.

The College is continuously working on the construction of its teaching staff. Till today there are 173 faculty members and 144 full-time teachers, including 13 professors (9.03%), 57 associate professors (39.58%) and 74 lecturers (51.39%). There is a total of 57 full- time teachers, over 40% of the teaching staff, holding doctoral degree.

The College has a growing number of education and research programs. Under the Discipline of Law, there are five sub-disciplines, including Jurisprudence, Civil and Commercial Law, Economic Law, Intellectual Property Law and Environmentaland Resources Protection Law. Public Administration discipline includes four sections, i.e. Administration, Education Economy, Social Security and Public Policy. The research strength of the College is on a constant rise. Among them, there are 50 CSSCI papers, 8 papers included in first-class Journal, 2 articles in the officially recognized Three Newspapers and One Journal, and 1 full-text copy of NPC newspapers and periodicals. In addition, there is a total of 77 scientific research projects (1 supported by National Social Science Fund; 48 supported by Humanities and Social Science Projects of the Ministry of Education or Beijing Social Science Fund). As for the research achievements, one research has been awarded first prize of Beijing Excellent Investigation and Research Achievements, and 4 adopted or recognized by provincial and ministerial level institutions. Over the past three years, the accumulated scientific research fund has gone beyond 4.1 million.

The College offers some education and training programs for the whole university. We take the responsibility of offering some foundational courses like Sports, College English, and some elective courses for all the students in BUCT. Our teaching staff only accounts for 16% of the whole university, but over 1/3 of the teaching tasks of the whole university have been completed by our teachers. The College thereof makes the backbone to BUCT’s foundational courses, electives as well as liberal arts education. In addition, since 2018, the College has set up a training program for minority preparatory students and a program on the construction of think tanks for higher education. In the past three years, 154 minority preparatory students have participated in this training program. Apart from these educational programs, we are also held responsible for the training of high-flier athletic team or art troupe. Over the past three years, BUCT’s high-level athletic teams have won over 100 awards at international, national or Beijing level. In 2019, BUCT’s women's volleyball team won the champion of Beijing and the basketball team ranked 9th in CUBA, a new record set in the school’s history.

The College stresses the importance on the basic-level party building work, which has made great progress in recent years. We have been following a standard but distinctive approach in building our party branches, and for the training and development of party members, we attach importance to the process as a whole as well as each individual step. The construction of party branches starts to make tremendous progress under the leadership of both the basic level party branches and party members. In the past three years, we have developed more than 90 students as party members and more than 300 students who have a strong desire to join in the party. The party branches of undergraduates were awarded National Party Construction Model Branch by the Ministry of Education in 2019 and was recognized as Advanced University-level Party Organization in Beijing in 2020. There are 2 model branches of school party construction work, 1 progressive branch and 2 Advanced Basic-level Party Organizations in BUCT.

Over the 20 years, we have tided through challenges and bladed us a new trail. All the students and faculty members of the College of Humanities and Law have been making unremitting efforts to write a new chapter.
