1. Overview

Rooted in the university’s strengths in science and engineering, the Department of Law at Beijing University of Chemical Technology focuses on interdisciplinary fields at the intersection of technology and law, establishing distinctive research directions. Faculty members have continuously deepened their expertise in cutting-edge areas such as digital governance, artificial intelligence regulation, intellectual property and ecological environmental law, and have published extensively in leading domestic legal journals like China Legal Science and internationally recognized SSCI-indexed journals, steadily enhancing the department’s academic influence. In recent years, the department has undertaken numerous national and provincial-level research projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Research Program, and has maintained productive publishing collaborations with leading international academic presses. These efforts contribute to both theoretical innovation and practical application, injecting unique “BUCT Law” insights into China’s law-based governance.

2. Academic and Scientific Research

Academic Research Projects

The Department has consistently achieved excellent results in securing national and provincial-level research projects, undertaking numerous studies of significant theoretical and practical importance, which demonstrates robust research vitality and profound academic expertise. These projects are characterized by their high level, broad coverage, and relevance to contemporary issues. Three key features are as follows:

High-level funding sources, including the National Social Science Fund, Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences projects, and Beijing Social Science Fund.

Cutting-edge research directions aligned with national needs and emerging issues, such as “minor offense governance,” “data assets disposal,” “regulation of digital free trade zones,” and “application of the Civil Code.”

Strong, outcome-oriented research teams led by core faculty members, producing influential academic monographs, high-quality papers, and well-founded legislative and policy recommendations, contributing academic insights to national strategies and local development.

High-Level Academic Publications

In recent years, faculty members have published over 110 papers in domestic and international journals, including more than 50 indexed in CSSCI or SSCI. These publications reflect the department’s continuous exploration and outstanding achievements in frontier legal fields, with the following distinctive characteristics:

1) Broad Research Coverage: The research spans multiple areas, including environmental law and climate change, intellectual property, civil and commercial law, international law, criminal law, procedural law, and social law, showcasing the comprehensiveness and balance of disciplinary development.

2) Excellent Research Quality: Publications appear in top-tier domestic law journals such as China Legal Science, Tsinghua University Law Journal, and Modern Law Science, as well as influential newspapers like People's Daily and Guangming Daily, and SSCI-indexed journals.

3) Alignment with Contemporary Needs: The research addresses major national strategies and legal demands, including the “dual carbon” goals, new productive forces, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, national security, and the implementation of the Civil Code, producing innovative studies with both theoretical depth and practical value.

Academic Monographs and Textbooks

Faculty members have achieved fruitful outcomes in publishing academic works, producing a series of high-quality monographs, translations, textbooks, and edited volumes. Published by authoritative domestic and international publishers, including The Commercial Press, Law Press China, Routledge, and Cambridge University Press, these works have covered areas including antitrust in the digital economy, biosecurity, emergency management, application of the Civil Code, and legal issues with the Belt and Road Initiative. They highlight the faculty’s broad academic vision, profound theoretical expertise, and exceptional international research capabilities. The faculty’s theoretical explorations and legislative interpretations also showcase their strong research innovation capacity and academic influence.

Policy Advisory Reports and Research Translation

1) Liu Feiqin authored the English report Global Compact Ten Principles Applied in Infrastructure Sectors under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)—A Practical Guide for Private Sector Players: Environment Principles, which was officially published on the United Nations website in October 2023. This report provides practical guidance for implementing environmental protection principles in infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, showcasing Chinese wisdom and solutions in global environmental governance.

2) Zhao Huimiao conducted in-depth research on the “Substantive Consolidation Bankruptcy Cases of Affiliated Enterprises,” which received positive feedback from a deputy ministerial-level leader of the Judicial Committee of the Supreme People’s Court in 2022. This research offers new perspectives and insights for the practical application of bankruptcy law.

3) Professor Zhang Jianwei proposed the “Recommendation on Enacting the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region and Surrounding Areas” in 2021 to address air pollution issues in the region. This recommendation was highly recognized by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and adopted by the People’s Congresses of Hebei and Henan provinces, providing robust legal support for regional environmental governance.

4) Professor Zhang Jianwei’s draft proposal on the “Legislation for Comprehensive Utilization of Resources” was adopted by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2021, contributing legal insights to the efficient use of resources and sustainable development.
