2020 BUCT English Speech Contest Held Successfully

The 2020 Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) English Speech Contest (also known as the audition of 2020 “FLTRP·ETIC CUP” English Speech Contest) was held successfully at the North Campus on October 14. The event aims to improve BUCTers’ comprehensive English ability and cultivate cross-cultural communication skills, as well as to create a good English learning atmosphere. Thirty-nine undergraduates participated in this event, who were selected, in a month, by teachers from Division of College English (for non-English major undergraduates) (shortened as “DCE” thereafter) and the Department of English in the School of Humanities and Law (SHL). The contest was supported by Teaching Administraion Office, who also issued certificates and awards. Prof. Hongbing Zhang, director of DCE, remarked and commented pertinently on participants’ performance from the perspective of an experienced judge.

  Miss Yifei Zhang, host of the event from 1701 National Design, has won the Grand Prize for two consecutive years

 

The English Speech Contest was hosted by Miss Yifei Zhang from 1701 National Design. Each contestant was given three minutes for a prepared speech themed on “Challenge to All: _______ ”. Contestants were emotionally inspired and presented to the audiences their outstanding performances. Most contestants displayed solid foundation and a good command of the English language. Some were equipped with experience and power, whose speeches were rich in allusions and arguments were convincingly supported. Participants also manifested skillful speech techniques, fluency, smoothness, inspiring and evocative phrasing.

  Grand Prize No. 2 winner: Yulang Cheng, an Experimental Law major from 1901

 

After nearly two and a half hours’ competition, Aotikul Aniwar of English 1901 won the first place of the Grand Prize with his impeccable pronunciation and wonderful performance; Yulang Chen of Experimental Law 1901 won the second place of the Grand Prize with his fluent and inspiring speech; Zihao Liu of Experimental Law 1901 won the third place with his calmness and good pronunciation. Aotikul Aniwar and Chen Yulang, the top two winners with outstanding performances, will represent BUCT to participate in the 2020 “FLTRP·ETIC CUP” National English Speech Contest and the 12th Beijing College Students’ English Speech Contest respectively.
