Our Student Wins the Grand Prize at the Fourth National Undergraduate Academic Forum “Words and the World” Hosted by Renmin University of China

The Fourth National Undergraduate Academic Forum “Words and the World”, hosted by the School of Foreign Languages and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Science at Renmin University of China, was held in Beijing on November 30, 2024. The forum, themed “Foreign Language Studies and Interdisciplinary Innovation: Fostering Undergraduate Research Awareness,” attracted submissions from students at leading institutions, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Foreign Studies University. After rigorous selection by experts, over 200 undergraduates were invited to participate. Representing our university, Hu Jinyang, a sophomore majoring in English from the College of Humanities and Law, under the guidance of Dr. Zhou Xueying, won the highest score in the sub-forum and was awarded the Grand Prize.

At the forum, Hu presented a paper titled “Emotion and Law: Emotional Construction and Poetic Justice in Dickens’ Bleak House.” The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach, bridging literature and legal history, and employs the theory of poetic justice alongside New Historicism to examine the novel’s potential impact on the evolution of social norms and judicial reforms. It underscores the ability of literature to encourage people’s critical engagement with legal systems and expands its practical value in public discourse.

The forum covered a wide range of topics, including literature, linguistics, translation, cultural studies, and area studies. At the National Education Conference, President Xi Jinping underscored the vital mission of education in providing continuous intellectual support and cultivating talent for China’s modernization. Reflecting this vision, the forum introduced a special segment on interdisciplinary research, encouraging the integration of foreign language studies with fields such as artificial intelligence, psychology, international relations, and international law.

In recent years, students from the College of Humanities and Law have consistently achieved remarkable results in a wide array of academic and innovative activities at various levels. With solid professional foundations and exceptional creativity, they have repeatedly won prestigious awards, demonstrating the college’s success in fostering academic innovation. Through the concerted efforts of multidisciplinary faculty teams from the Department of English, the Department of Law, and beyond, the college has developed an integrated interdisciplinary training model. This approach not only enhances students’ academic skills but also emphasizes collaboration and practical abilities across disciplines. Looking ahead, our students will continue to explore cutting-edge academic frontiers in high-level academic events, further highlighting our university’s unique strengths and advantages in cultivating interdisciplinary talent.
