Summer practice of Postgraduate Students from the school of Humanities and Law of BUCT: “Walking Ideological and Political courses” enter Tianjin to explore the code of Coordinated Development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area
On the morning of July 25, 2025, the practice team set off from Xiong’ an Railway Station, settling the last stop of the “Walking Ideological and Political Courses” journey in Tianjin. The team focused on Tianjin’s functional positioning and practical path within the coordinated development framework of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, and explored the interplay between history and modernity to deepen the understanding of national strategies. After arriving at Tianjin West Railway Station, the practice team launched their first research immediately. Tianjin West Railway Station is one of the region’s key railway hubs of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. Its integration of unique neo-classical historical architecture and modern transport functions has become a vivid window for observing the historical heritage and modern development of Tianjin, also known as the city of “river and sea junction.” Team members examined passenger flow management, transfer guidance systems, and traffic organization around the surrounding area, gaining insights into its role and functions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei intercity transportation framework. At the same time, team members promoted the national strategic ideas of coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to travelers.
Subsequently, the practice team went to Tianjin’ s Italian-Style Tourist District for an on-site visit. The District has well-preserved a large amount of Italian architecture in the early 20th-century. It is a symbol of Tianjin’ s modern history and a vivid illustration of how urban culture and tourism integrated. The practice team members briefly exchanged with some merchants and tourists to learn how the area has preserved its historical context and has sparkled its commercial vitality through protective development. The district has become both a popular city card of Tianjin and a leisure destination for citizens. This research subsequently offered a direct case for how to balance heritage conservation, modern development and distinctive city-space construction of the urban planning.
To further understand the coordinated development strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the capital’s “streamling, rectifying and promoting” special action, on the afternoon of July 25th, 2025, the team members visited the Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall to a “theoretical deepening course” and carried out a special learning and research activity.
Inside the Hall, the members focused and studied the city historical revolution, the territorial overall planning and the central urban area. The members gained a deep understanding of Tianjin’ s urban planning and evolution across different historical stages, major policy orientations, spatial configurations, and strategies of urban scale regulations. These provided an important urban sample for understanding coordinated regional development.
During the research process, a key theme for the practice team was the functional coordination across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the team compared each region’s national strategic function and role, industrial distribution, and spatial carrying capacity. The research is of crucial significance to grasp the core essence of “relieving Beijing’s non-capital functions” and to understand what role Tianjin plays in the regional coordination.
The final leg of the visit brought the team to a special exhibition on Tianjin’s achievements in land greening and ancient tree protection. The exhibition showcased Tianjin’s remarkable ecological accomplishments, including its efforts to strengthen green ecological barrier. Members carefully studied Tianjin’s practical experience in implementing the developing concept of “green Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei” and reinforcing the practical experience on ecological protection and restoration, further deepening their understanding that coordinated development must adhere to the principle of ecological priority and green development.
This Tianjin research practice served as a critical frontline for the “walking ideological and political courses” of the postgraduates. It is also a crucial part for the team to deeply comprehend the connotation of the coordinated development strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the “streamling, rectifying and promoting” special action of the capital. Through on-site study, the members systemically got to know the urban planning system and the development blueprint of Tianjin. Besides, the members deeply realized some various key roles Tianjin played, like undertaking the non-capital functions of Beijing, optimizing regional layout and jointly building a green ecological barrier. This practice research laid a solid practical foundation for the postgraduates to subsequently deepen social practice research and serve the major national strategies.
